Blancpain and les Métiers d’Art, Shakudō

Renowned for its engraving and enamel painting workshops as well as its Damascene timepieces, Blancpain is presenting shakudō. Japanese in origin, shakudō is an replica watches alloy principally composed of copper and gold, which acquires a dark patina between blue and black, according to variations in its composition and texture.

The black patina is obtained following a process called passivation, which calls for the application of a solution. This solution, which is composed of copper acetate (green gray), has been traditionally fabricated in Japan where it is known as rokushō. According to the number of applications of the rokushō solution, the black becomes successively deeper and more intense. The shakudō was used historically among other things to create swords, decorative objects and jewelry. The artisans who practiced shakudō often added engravings and ornaments.

Recognizable from his elephants head, the image of Ganesh is portrayed on the dial. For Hindus, Ganesh is the God who conquers obstacles. He is also the God of wisdom, intelligence, prudence and the leader of the schools and academics. This is illustrated with a hand engraved gold throne placed in the center of the Hindu motifs. Finely detailed, the ornaments represented on this piece have been crafted in Damascene. This technique consists of fashioning troughs upon the dial surface into which fine threads of soft metal, in this case gold, are painstakingly hammered in place, thereupon to be hand engraved.

Fully respecting the aesthetics of the Villeret collection, these models are housed in a red gold stepped bezel case of 45 mm, the diameter of which gives free reign to the creativity of Blancpain’s craftsmen. Slim d’Hermès Perspective cavalière

Hermès offers its own interpretation of the “Perspective cavalière” through an exceptional new model featuring a dial that sets a perfect stage for the champlevé enamel technique: Slim d’Hermès Perspective cavalière.

At Hermès, the story often begins with a drawing. Originally designed for a silk scarf, the “Perspective cavalière” motif is expressed on a gold plate. The artisan reproduces it in metal by forming small cells of various depths through careful workmanship with a tool known as a graver. Then comes the enamelling. The artisan uses to brush to delicately apply the molten glass powder in the cavities, before – much like a painter – giving life to the colours by successively firing them at temperatures of more than 800°C, thereby gradually revealing all the many nuances and depth effects. After each delicate firing operation, the enameller sands down the piece with an ever-finer grain in order to give the model the radiance it deserves.

Hermès offers an artistic interpretation of the fundamentals of this “cavalier perspective”. In the absence of any vanishing point, the raised letters forming the words “Hermès Paris” on the dial are reproduced in two dimensions. This set of blue, red, yellow or white parallel lines is issued in a six-piece limited edition, with each of these exceptional creations housed in a 750 white gold case and driven by an ultra-thin Manufacture Hermès H1950 movement.

Harry Winston – Histoire de Tourbillon 6

The curtain rises on the sixth chapter of Histoire de Tourbillon. The Histoire de Tourbillon 6 movement is composed of two independent parts, like two heads on a single body. Hours and minutes are displayed on one side, regulated by the tri-axial tourbillon. They are recognizable by their color coding – orange against a gray background – and housed within a rounded protrusion on the case. The right side of the watch is distinguished by its blue hands and markings against a black backdrop. It features a dial with hands that can be started, stopped and reset at will. A blue ceramic pusher at 2 o’clock allows this superlative creation to display the elapsed hours and minutes like a chronograph. This unique and versatile function also drives a dual-time display that may be adjusted as desired via the 3 o’clock crown.

Omnidirectional tourbillon

The incredible technical sophistication of the tri-axial tourbillon is supremely exclusive. The first cage carries the balance wheel and performs one turn every 45 seconds. It rotates inside a second cage, which spins in 75 seconds along its vertical axis. This ensemble is set in motion inside a third, spherical cage, which completes its own revolution in 300 seconds. The latter is the cage featuring the orange seconds hand, visible beneath a sapphire crystal dome that offers a fascinating view of the three-dimensional ballet of time. Meanwhile, the karussel performs a 30-second rotation.

The varying rotation angles and speeds of the tourbillon and karussel play a decisive role in chronometric performance, which is the best fake watch’s accuracy. Together they counteract the detrimental effects of gravity. Precision is further enhanced by the fast-rotating twin barrels, boasting an exceptionally regular torque.

A few figures highlight the incomparable complexity of this timepiece. Caliber HW4701 is made up of 683 parts. Its tri-axial tourbillon alone requires 141 parts and weighs a mere 1.85 grams. This voluminous graphic structure is visible beneath four sapphire crystals, all distinguished by convex and complex shapes.

Controlled-start karussel

The complication that makes the Histoire de Tourbillon 6 unique is a subtle and inconspicuous one. If need be, the karrusel positioned at 1 o’clock can remain idle. When started, it acts as the regulator for the independent part of the HW4701 movement, occupying the right side. It is stopped by default, but starts running when the pusher, located on the caseband is pressed. The specific construction of the karussel means that its balance wheel and its cage are simultaneously linked to the movement’s energy source. Even when halted, they are under constant tension and when released, instantly accelerate to cruising speed. This extremely rare karussel, with a 30-second rotation, operates at high speed in order to occupy a maximized number of positions in space.

With this regulator, time displays can be personalized. The movement on the right side is akin to a monopusher chronograph and replicates that function. Its hands, however, are adjustable via a Cartier fake watches crown at 3 o’clock. Therefore, they can provide a dual-time display that is accurate to the nearest minute. This rare capability is ideal for offset time zones such as India (UTC +5:30), Caracas (UTC – 4:30) or Katmandu (UTC + 5:45).

The case is crafted using a white gold alloy with a high palladium content, giving it an attractive glow and radiating a matte sheen that expertly matches the distinctive look of the movement’s surface. It is entirely hand-beveled and sandblasted to give it a granular texture before undergoing an NAC galvanic treatment, which coats it with a black metal layer. The rendering is both sophisticated and striking, and entirely in harmony with the technical nature of the timepiece.

A speciality of the village of Fleurier that has been home to Chopard Manufacture since 1996, fleurisanne engraving is a now almost extinct art that contributed to the reputation of local 19th century  Breitling replica watchmakers and to the appeal of their timepieces that spread as far as China. This highly distinctive technique is notably distinguished by its motifs carved in high relief. The engraver cuts away the surrounding metal to leave the pattern he wishes to make stand out. The raised surface is then engraved with a scrolling pattern known as ‘volutes’ or with flowers, and polished to achieve a shiny effect. The background is hammer-stippled to give it a grainy effect. This extremely demanding skill requires the artisan to devote considerable time to this process and to display absolute technical mastery. Eager to revive and ensure the future of this ancient craft, Chopard has trained expert hands in-house in order to perpetuate this traditional form of engraving that played such a key role in making the village of Fleurier known far and wide.

Technical feat

Housing a twin-barrel self-winding movement with a 65-hour power reserve inside an ultra-thin 7.10 mm case is no mean feat.
